Question: 20019

Can we use miswak or unperfumed tooth paste, cream, lotion, patrolium jelly during haj days?

Summary of answer

Using unperfumed creams during Ihram is allowed in Islam, as long as they contain no fragrance. Only scented products are prohibited because their perfume clings to the body or clothing.

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah.

Shaykh Ibn `Uthaymin (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

If these things are free of perfume then it is not forbidden to use them, because what is forbidden in ihram is perfume or using anything in which there is perfume.

Ibn Qudamah (may Allah have mercy on him) said, discussing the things that are forbidden in ihram:

(… putting perfume on one's skin or clothes (or any cream etc. containing perfume)… because this is not permitted, because it will cling to him and its fragrance will remain. (End quote from Ash-Sharh Al-Mumti`, 7/158)
